The best time to visit is definitely summer, from June to August, when the lake warms up enough for swimming. Out of all the spots on our trip, Mondsee had the most swimmable water, with plenty of open beaches and even water sports rentals.

Grüner See is best reached by car—about 2 hours from Graz or 2.5 from Vienna. It’s located near the town of Tragöß. Parking is available at the trailhead and was easy when we arrived early. There’s also a small info center with maps and a café during peak season. There’s no public transport directly to the lake, so we definitely recommend driving.

At 1,970 meters above sea level, Lünersee is a high-altitude Alpine lake in Austria that’s both wild and serene. It’s a former glacial lake now dammed for hydroelectric power, but it hasn’t lost its natural charm.
The best time to visit Lünersee is between June and early October, when the snow has melted and the cable car is running. The trail around the lake is about 6 km (3.7 miles) and pretty manageable, with sweeping views every step of the way.
We brought a picnic, stopped at quiet spots along the trail, and just soaked it all in. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why you fell in love with Austria in the first place. Swimming is not allowed because the water is glacier-fed and icy cold year-round. We dipped our hands in, and that was enough!
The easiest way to reach Lünersee is by taking the Lünerseebahn cable car from the valley station near Brand in Vorarlberg. We parked at the base station (ample parking available, even during summer weekends), then took the quick ride up—within minutes, we were looking down at the turquoise lake from above. Public transport from Bludenz to Brand is possible but more time-consuming than driving.
11. Lake Millstatt (Millstätter See)
Lake Millstatt was one of the most well-rounded lakes we explored in Austria. Nestled in the gentle hills of Carinthia, Millstätter See gave us a calmer and slower vibe. We visited in late summer, and the atmosphere was vibrant but not overwhelming.
